In recent years, the representation of nature has been the subject of various critiques. On one hand, authors like Timothy Morton reject the very concept of nature, suggesting that it implies an anthropocentric perspective that separates humans from the rest of the planet’s inhabitants. His proposal of a dark ecology advocates for a more integrated view of the living, dismissing idealized visions of traditional ecology. On the other hand, Jens Andermann goes even further with his formulation of the term postpaisaje, through which he suggests that nature can no longer be represented as a beautiful or harmonious entity, but rather must be referred to as a field of conflict.

The works of Juan Ignacio Cabruja unfold in the context of these debates. Both his “pinturas negras” and his light-based pieces allude to possible territories or landscapes that resist crystallizing into stable and compliant images.
