"In Ariel Costa’s paintings, the wilderness returns in the form of reveries that often evoke the impossibility of returning to that part of the world from which we have been displaced. We encounter a man-child, frequently dejected by his inability to merge with the very wilderness that once nurtured him—now rendered estranged—and engaging in simulacra, such as disguising himself as a bird, or appearing defenseless in the face of the constant perils inherent in inhabiting nature, which, just as it grants you the song of thrushes and the cool shade of trees, also confronts you with the sting of a viper, a stingray, or some other mysterious danger."
