Juan Ignacio Cabruja
1992, Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina.
Juan Ignacio Cabruja is an experimental artist currently focusing his work on the pictorial exploration of light, its absence, and how it interacts with space and other materials. He understands the atmospheric as an aesthetic category that he constantly explores. He is interested in how the audience emotionally relates to the climates and atmospheres he generates. He works with elements and tools related to the night, in a sensitive way, trying to create suspended temporalities and spaces. He also often revisits historical paintings, generating citations by using the color maps of those works in an abstract manner.
He works as a lighting designer, visual artist, and creates light and interactive installations. He approaches this as a way to experiment and continue exploring the phenomenology of the different projects he develops.
He holds a degree in Fine Arts from the U.N.R. and explores different tools and theoretical and technical knowledge by attending various educational spaces. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in “Theory and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts” at UNTREF and “Ab – ele”, a space for choral exchange for project, curatorial, and editorial work taught by Carla Barbero and Javier Villa. In 2022, he completed the postgraduate program "Technologies in Contemporary Art. Update Program" (UBA). In 2021, he participated in the "Artist Program" taught by the Torcuato Di Tella University and in 2019, he completed "Escuela Prestada" at the J.M. Musto Municipal School, Rosario, a program that invited artists to work and engage with the school, its teachers, students, and workshops. He has also taken courses and clinics with renowned artists.
His solo exhibitions and presentations include: "Luz mala remixed" with text by Catalina Silvetti at Quimera Galería (2023, CABA); "Luz Mala", at Satélite gallery (2022, Córdoba); participation with a site-specific installation at Espacio Audiovisual ArteBa curated by Julieta Tarraubella (2021, CABA); "Todo voltaje es posible", a performative installation with Iván Gonzalez at Satélite gallery (2021, Córdoba); and "Mediato”, a solo exhibition at CRUDO (2021, Rosario).
